stollen making and kitchen light

For those not on Facebook here are pictures of stollen making at Tamara's and also of the light that is finally hanging in my kitchen. I brought it with me from Belgium and carted it around for years and now finally have it hanging. I love it!

Christmas Parade

Here are some pictures of the sea turtle float in the New Smyrna Beach Christmas parade on Saturday. I made the turtle but was wishing the entire time for Kay's help.h

Blog Time

I keep forgetting about the blog and I really did like it. And, not everyone is on Facebook. Facebook has kind of taken over our lives lately but it is a fun way to keep up with everyone. A few pictures of the grandkids.

Sand Castles

Luke Michael has been on a "Castle" kick lately. He comes out of the bedroom in the morning and goes straight to the front door and wants to go out and make castles. Of course Oma has to pack the dirt in but keeps on shoveling.

My new fence

The fence has been up for a week, but the gate got finished this morning. I really like it. It goes just past the bogenvilla bush and stops before the living room windows. Later I hope to make it go further but the next panel will take the fence from 6 feet high down to 4 feet and it will go 4 feet high around the front. But that will be awhile yet.

Monday

Monday morning we went to walk around Lake Lily and then went to the play ground there. Oma has a problem getting Luke Michael out of the "baby" swing now so am encouraging him to use the big boy swing. He was enjoying himself swinging on his tummy when two other boys came along. He didn't want to give up his swing but eventually did when I told him it was time to share. After another walk around the lake we came home and Luke Michael was determined to "dig in dirt". When it got too warm we relaxed together in the only shade to be had, on the front door step. A good time was had by all.

A few pieces of our day

Today we did a few errands. First we went to the library to renew Alex's book. Luke Michael likes to hand the librarian the library card. While we were there he wanted to go to the children's library and look at books. Then he decided he wanted to take a book home so I let him use Alex's card and take out his own book. When we got home he thought it was cozy to read the book in his new tent. Then, while I was folding laundry he found a pair of daddy's socks and put them on along with mommy's shoes. Never a dull moment.

Guess Who?

New Outside Shower

Here is the new outside shower. I'm going to put some pavers on the ground so you won't be standing in mud but the water can soak into the ground. It will be for rinsing off after coming from the beach. I'm making changes little by little.

Old Suitcases

When I thought I had emptied the house next door Kay asked me if I had taken the suitcases out of the attic. I hadn't, so I got out the ladder and went up and got them. They have been sitting in my garage and I had no way of getting them to Kay so decided to use them myself. At the moment they are empty but I could use them to store stuff in if needed. I know that the bottom one was my mothers and it wouldn't surprise me if it was the suitcase we took when we went to Texas when I was 6 weeks old. That was a long time ago.

Outside shower is gone

The outside shower hasn't worked for several years. At first it stopped draining and then the water didn't run, it just trickled. The problem was that there was no roof on it so when it rained it filled up with water and had become a mosquito breeding place. So, I had it removed. I am having another shower put up on the outside of the pantry wall so people can rinse off after the beach, but it will just drain onto the ground. I can't believe how big it makes my mini yard look just having it gone. Guess I will be painting the side of the garage this Labor Day.

Avocado Trees

When I got back from England I found these 2 plants growing in my compost bin. I had put a cover on it before I left so they were rather pale and spindly looking. I'm not sure whether I have Kirsten and Carl, or Alina and Nick to thank because I think they both ate avocados while they were visiting me. Don't know what the neighbors thought when they saw me digging around with my bare hands in the compost, don't really care. I put them in pots and set them in the sun and as you can see they are looking pretty good. Give me a few years and I will have pineapples and avocados from my own garden.

My Bargain Bouquet

Yesterday at the grocery store they had gladiola's on sale for $2.99 a bunch. I love gladiolas so I was very pleased with my find.

First Day of School 2009

First day of school for 2009 for Alex and Samantha. Here are some pictures. I made french toast for breakfast. Alex and Samantha ready to walk out the door, saying they were not happy that school was starting already, and Luke Michael who seems to be eager to get down to that school business.

Summer Vacation

Just got back from spending 6 weeks across the "pond". I've posted to Facebook, but I still like blogging and not everyone does Facebook. I stayed with Alina and Nick in their new guest room. Talk about a "room with a view," complete with cows in the pasture in back of their yard. When Alina and Nick were working I ate with Kirsten and Carl. My last night there I made chicken for dinner and we all ate together. Dessert was an apple and blackberry pie made from apples that Carl picked from his mother's apple tree. It will take me several postings to cover 6 weeks worth of vacation. I forgot to say I arrived in England on July 4th right in time for Kirsten and Carl's 4th of July party.

Quick word from England

Haven't figured out how to get my pictures onto Alina's computer so this will just be a quick update without pictures.  The weather has been quite good by English standards--rainy but with sunny patches in between.  I am enjoying working in Alina's "English Country Garden".  It's well grown and just needs tiding up around the edges.  The number of birds that come to their bird feeder and back yard is amazing.  Every thing from small wrens and finches to spotted woodpeckers, green woodpeckers and even parrots.  Alina was calling them parakeets but I think the British word parakeet has a different meaning than the American one.  Since Alina and Nick have been working I've been enjoying my meals at Kirsten and Carl's and helping in their garden some.  They have been in their house longer and were used to having a big back yard so don't need that much done.  Kirsten has a wonderful little vegetable patch.  When I went to dinner the other night I got to dig my own potatoes.  We have also had zucchini fresh from the garden.  She will have corn on the cob soon.  I do need to get a picture of her garden because she ran out of manure when she got to one corner and the 4 corn stalks that are there are pitiful compared to all the rest.  Guess that about brings everyone up to date for those that aren't on Facebook.  Pictures when I get back to my own computer.

Mama Duck

Last Thursday we went to the park on Lake Lily. Luke Michael had been down the slide several times when I saw him squating down and looking under the slide. I went to see what had his attention and there was a mother duck sitting there surrounded by lots of downy feathers. Of course I didn't have my camera with me so wanted to go back, but it took a week before we went again. Sure enough Mama Duck was still there and someone had put up a sign to warn people, but I think she is determined. At one point she changed positions and I counted 9 eggs in the nest. Actually it was Luke Michael who discovered the eggs. He would go look under the slide each time after he slid down and suddenly I heard him calling, "egg, egg," and sure enough there were eggs. Unfortunately we probably won't get to see the ducklings since I am leaving tomorrow for England, but maybe Tamara will take him to the park on one of her days off. (I almost said in her spare time, but I'm sure she doesn't even know what that means with her busy schedule.)

What to do on a Rainy Day

Luckily Luke Michael and I went to the park about 9:30 this morning because at 11:00 it started thundering and pouring, so the rest of the day was spent inside. Luke M. was getting very frustrated because Alex and Samantha were in their rooms and wouldn't let him in. I finally built him a "house" to distract him and it wasn't long before he had company in his "house". Of course once he had an audience he had to become "Spider Man" and try to climb the walls. He gets very upset because he pulls on his fingers and no web comes out. He keeps saying "I can't open it". It took us awhile to figure out what he was trying to open.

What a difference a few years makes

Thursday was the Seaside Fiesta on Flagler Avenue. The turtle group had a booth there. Of course it's always the same 2 or 3 of us that show up to do these things. Samantha came home with me on Thursday afternoon for a short visit and to help man our booth. She had done this once before either 4 or 5 years ago. The pictures say the rest.
